Moelven is one of the Nordics’ leading wood industry companies. Among their products are wooden panels for indoor use, which can be found in several large hardware store chains. The packages are made of fossil-based plastic and are up to 5.4 meters long and 24.5 centimeters wide. Each year, one million packages are sold enclosed in the packaging.

Today, Moelven Wood packages these panels in fossil-based plastic. It fulfills the functional need but does not live up to Moelven’s own standards and the future’s demands for sustainability. Therefore, they seek alternative solutions to replace the packaging and are now turning to startups, companies, innovators, and researchers to find a solution.

“We want to find a sustainable solution that can meet the requirements for protection, moisture regulation, and visual presentation that is also cost-effective and scalable. It doesn’t have to be a “ready to use” solution that is offered, it can be an idea, a material, or a product that we can take a closer look at together”, says Tjalling Chaudron, product developer at Moelven Wood.

Optimize the idea or product

To participate in the innovation competition, you need to submit an application. Solution proposals deemed to have potential will be selected for a two-day workshop in the form of a BioBoosters Hackathon on December 11-12.

To reach the best solution, you can participate as an individual company or join forces with other actors to create a team. Everything to optimize the idea or product. Finding synergies and collaboration opportunities during the workshop may also be possible.
The solutions presented during the hackathon will be judged by a jury that will select a winner.

The goal is a collaboration beyond the innovation competition that can lead to a sustainable packaging solution and new successful partnership. BioBoosters is a win-win concept that challenges providers and those with challenges solutions can strengthen their businesses.

BioBoosters

The MoelvenHackathon is one of several innovation competitions within the BioBoosters initiative. It is a concept developed by nine change-driven regions, from seven different European countries, including Paper Province, with the aim of promoting business that benefits the environment.

By offering companies the opportunity to openly announce a challenge or a need, the goal is to find solutions through external actors with innovative ideas.

BioBoosters is run through the project of the same name. It includes actors from Sweden, Finland, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania and is financed by the EU through the Baltic Sea Program with support from Region Värmland.

More BioBooster challenges this fall:

Holmen Skog, Sweden – wants to find more uses for the ash that remains when they dry wood in their sawmills.

Valio, Finland – wants to find ways to deal with seasonal variations in milk production.

Vidzeme Planning Region, Latvia – wants to make CMMS system improvements.
