Researchers publish article on the transformation towards a forest-based bioeconomy

“A Quadruple and Quintuple Helix Approach to Regional Innovation Systems in the Transformation to a Forestry-Based Bioeconomy, Journal of the Knowledge Economy”. This is the title of the article accepted by the Journal of the Knowledge Economy written by Ida Grundel, Senior lecturer at Karlstad University and Margareta Dahlström, Professor at Karlstad University.

The article aims to understand the opportunities of the conditions for making a transformation to a forestry-based bioeconomy in Värmland based on a regional innovation system (RIS) linked to a quadruple and quintuple helix system. This means that several target groups are covered in order to increase the breadth and monitor the collaboration between them.

In brief, the results show that the use of a quintuple helix (RIS) for transformation to a forestry-based bioeconomy in Värmland can be a possible path towards sustainability. The model proposes that participation by the civil society in the innovation system could contribute to a greater transformation in terms of changing consumer behaviour, production patterns, technology development, infrastructure, norms and values.
