Mapping of valuable industrial symbiosis

Cooperation and joint demonstration of strength improve the opportunities for industrial symbiosis. For this reason Paper Province is initiating an initiative together with the University of Linköping, RISE, and ten other regional partners. “We are surveying what it looks like in the region and clarifying which residual streams there are”, says Magnus Persson, project manager at Paper Province.

Industrial symbiosis is about giving and taking. Companies cooperate and residual products from one receive new life and are utilised as a raw material by another. It could be waste, or waste heat from a pulp and paper mill that is used by a nearby industry. Industrial symbiosis can also be services that are shared, for example logistics solutions. The advantages are both economically and environmentally beneficial for the companies participating in the process.

– As a cluster we have in the last ten years participated in many different projects and initiatives to increase the value of residual and side streams for companies in the region. We now want to get a better overall grip. By surveying and visualising the streams we can facilitate further business development, says Magnus Persson.

One million from Vinnova

Vinnova is supporting the project with SEK 1 million to improve the prerequisites for industrial symbiosis within the industry, and between industry and, for example, municipal facilities.

In addition to Paper Province, which is the project management for the initiative, the University of Linköping, Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), and ten other partners are also participating.

The University of Linköping has been conducting research to contribute towards the development of new industrial symbiosis for a long time.

Murat Mirata works as an assistant lecturer in the research group Industrial and Urban Symbiosis.

– At Paper Province we already have several examples of industrial symbiosis that show the value of this concept. With this project we want to more systematically support symbiotic development to the advantage of both companies and the environment, he says.

Broad survey

Pernilla Gervind at RISE talks about the broad survey that the project participants will be working with and that they will be delving deeply into some case studies to discuss different issues concerning industrial symbiosis.

– We are hoping that the project will create interest and knowledge that contributes towards further cooperation between different players both within and without Paper Province, she says.
