Kick-off for the Nordic Network in Industrial Symbiosis

Paper Province together with Linköping University represented Sweden at the kick-off for a new Nordic Network in Industrial Symbiosis. It is the Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordregio that created the network for participants to share experiences and together accelerate the development. At the meeting in Copenhagen there were representatives from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

October 10th was the kick-off in Copenhagen at the Nordic Council of Ministers. Magnus Persson from Paper Province participated.

– A very good initiative to start this network. There is much to learn from each other about industrial symbiosis and business development linked to this, “says Magnus.

Industrial symbiosis is a concept that waste resources from an industry is used as a resource for someone else.

At the meeting in Copenhagen participated the following clusters/networks: Kalundborg Symbiosis (Denmark), Naestved Ressource City (Denmark), Digipolis (Finland), Eyde Cluster (Norway) and Paper Province from Sweden.

The aim is to share information and knowledge about different initiatives to inspire each other and create new collaborations. The network is open for more actors who can connect afterwards.

Some ideas that came out during the meeting were:

  • To produce a catalogue of successful examples of industrial symbiosis that can serve as inspiration and guidance.
  • Creating a network of experts that can be consulted by those who need help.
  • To do a training program for capacity building.
  • Keeping a strong focus on the regional and urban aspects. “The global market is changing rapidly, but your city will still be there in ten years.”

The participants decided to work on a proposal for funding for further development of some of the ideas. The thought is also that the network will expand from just the Nordic countries to the entire Baltic Sea region and participants will now look at potential representatives in the other countries.
